New Musical Works Development Program

Developing new musical theatre writing

At The ICMT we love being innovative and offering our students more interesting ways to learn their craft. We are also passionate about helping upcoming musical theatre writers get their works seen by the people who matter. So we’re more than excited to announce our latest innovation – our New Works Development Program.

We’re collaborating with some of New York’s up-and-coming new Musical Theatre writers to workshop and develop fifteen minute excerpts from their most recent, never-performed work. Our very own ICMT students will be in on the ground level, taking on the roles and helping to shape the pieces. At the end of the development process we will be presenting these fifteen minute musicals to a panel of Industry influencers – producers, directors and investors, as well as casting directors and agents.

We’ve gotten off to a great start with our workshop of a show entitled Revival, a spiritual folk rock piece about love and justice, written by Kristen Plylar-Moore and directed by Broadway veteran and new works specialist Kristine Bendul. Next up, we tackle Within Elsewhere, an exciting new piece which explores the question: what if Elsewhere was a real place? Written by Trent Jeffords and Josh Betancourt, the piece will be directed and choreographed by the amazing Dev Janki. We are proud to have the amazing Julianne Merrill as our Musical Director and Co-ordinator of the Program.
